What decisions in my life did others see very differently, only for it to turn out later that it was exactly the right decision? That was a question during my morning sales team kickoff. And I really had to think about it for a moment. One situation comes to mind, back when I was 19, I was working in a factory. After school, I didn't really know what to do with myself, but I wanted to be free and live independently. So I moved out, rented a small apartment, and looked for a job, and my second job was as a welder in a factory. I welded safes together, it was physical work, but it was piecework and I earned good money. Back then, I had 1800 to 2000 marks net. At 18 or 19 , that was a lot of money. My own apartment, my own car, and enough cash for a nice life. Yes, that was great. Stop, short interruption. Hey, if you like this video, there are over 2000 videos on this channel. For over 10 years, two new videos have been coming out every week. Hey, subscribe to the channel and you won't miss a single video. How cool is that? So, subscribe now and let's continue. Eventually, however, I realized that this wasn't all there was to life, and if I stayed in the factory, I'd end up like my colleagues in the department, who were 40 or 50 and doing the same thing every day for decades. So I started applying. By the way, I sent out a total of 120 applications to get an apprenticeship. I did everything wrong that you could possibly do wrong as an apprentice or when looking for an apprenticeship. Everything. 120 applications, and I decided if nothing came of those 120, then I would stay in the factory, it was meant to be. And as luck would have it, the 120th. Decision was a heating and plumbing wholesaler in Lüdenscheid , and I got an apprenticeship there. Yes, and then I signed the apprenticeship contract, and the next morning I went to my department head, my supervisor, Wilhelm Otemann. An older man, relatively close to retirement, two years before retirement , and I said, I'm quitting. I was a good employee, because I was never sick . I was always reliable. I was always on time. I always tried my best, and I usually met my piecework quotas, and accordingly, I always got paid in full. Okay. And I said, yes, I'm doing an apprenticeship now as a wholesale merchant, and I'm quitting. And then Mr. Utemann said, Dirk, there are so many business people, so many people who sit in the office. You have a secure, good job here. That's also true . The company still exists today, Burgwächter in, in Volmarstein. And you have a secure job here. You have good money here. Just stay here. Yes, I hesitated for a moment, because he was essentially committing a bit of mental arson. But I left, and that was ultimately the best decision. Through this business training, I gained a completely different perspective that I would never have gotten in the factory, and a different environment, too. That was important as well. Exactly. So, what decision did I make in my life that others thought was wrong, but turned out to be one of the best decisions in retrospect? That was one of them. What is the learning from this ? Well, first of all, there is a biography where such things are described in detail, and it reached number 7 on the Spiegel bestseller list two years ago, by the way. Mm. What is the learning? Your decision doesn't always have to please your environment. And if the people around you advise you against it, then ask yourself, what reason do they have to advise you against it? What benefit do they get out of it? Your environment loves you the way you are right now. If you change, then it is uncomfortable for your environment, and they would have to change too. But most people don't want to change. So, first learning. Second learning. When you shoot with a bow and arrow, you have to pull the arrow back first, and then you let it go, and then it flies far. In my life, there have always been situations where I consciously made the decision to step back first in order to then move forward with much more momentum. 2,000 marks net, my salary in the first year, my training allowance was 550. That meant the car had to be sold. That meant I needed a room in a shared apartment. That meant living hand to mouth. Yes, that's how it was. But again, it shaped me as a personality, it gave me a lot of self-confidence, and it led to me being able to take a huge step forward in my career afterward. I think those are the two most important learnings. If you see other learnings, that was my answer to the kickoff in the morning with the sales staff. By the way, if you would like to be there sometime, that's only possible if you are a member of the team. If you are an employee on the sales team, then from time to time I join the kickoff and we discuss things like that. Yes, how do you get in? By applying. We will post the link everywhere, or you can find it on our career page at dirkruter.com. There you will find all the information about career options in Bochum and Dubai. And now, let's go.
