Belege

The test of leadership isn’t how you behave when things go right. It’s what you do when everything falls apart.

I had one of my leaders say, "Hey, can you hop on a call? It's really important." It was like 8:00 PM at night, and I was like, "Oh, this is gonna be bad." And so I get on the call. She let me know that three people had just quit, no notice. There's like a whole thing that they smeared on the internet. All these things are happening. And I remember in that moment, the first thought that I had as she was telling me this was, "I need to train her to know this is not a big deal." And so I was like, "Oh, okay. Interesting." And she was like, you know, like looking at me like, "Are you upset?" And I was like, "Okay. Well, let's make sure they're out of all the systems, and I think after that we should do this and that, and can I support you in any way? Is there anything else I can do?" And she-- I could tell she was waiting for me to, like, freak out. And then, you know what I saw is that within that call, the first five minutes, she was clearly very worked up. By the end of that call, she was cool as a cucumber. Now, why is that? Because I intentionally said to myself, "I am not going to escalate, 'cause if I escalate, she'll escalate." And for me, it's more important to me that I can regulate my team than it is that I act on my emotions and then to feel better, whatever it might be
