14 years ago, I almost lost it while building my company, Kissmetrics. I was doing everything by the book, I had a target audience, published constantly, did all the research myself. But the traffic I got back was just embarrassing compared to what I put in. Back then, I was writing about "marketing funnels." Big term with Large search volume Everybody wanted it but nobody who searched for it seemed to want what it led to. So we tried something different. Instead of "marketing funnel," we wrote about "how marketing funnels work." Smaller term. Way less search volume. Felt like a downgrade. That month we pulled in 142,149 visitors from those longer terms. And they didn't just visit, they signed up. See there's a real difference between someone typing "build email list" and someone typing "get my first 1000 email subscribers." One's browsing. One's buying. This was years ago, and the lesson has only gotten more true with brands like River Pool and Spas making $2Million in Sales or Amazon making 57% of their sales with long tail keywords. But how do you find these long tail keywords? Tools like Ubersuggest, make this a lot easier by giving a holistic overview of all auto complete suggestions sorted by SEO difficulty. Follow to stay updated with the latest marketing strategies and tools to scale your business!

14 years ago, I almost lost it all while building my old company, Kissmetrics. I was doing everything by the book. I had a target audience, published consistently, and I did all the research myself. But the traffic I got was just embarrassing versus what I put in. Back then, I was writing about marketing funnels, big terms with large search volume. Everyone wanted it, but the people who searched for it didn't want what it led to. So we tried something different. Instead of marketing funnel, we wrote about how marketing funnels work. It's a smaller term with way less search volume. Felt like a downgrade. That month, we pulled in 142,149 visitors from people who searched those type of long-tail phrases, and they didn't just visit. A lot of them signed up. See, there's a difference from someone who types in "build email list" and someone who types in "How do I get my first thousand email subscribers?" One's browsing, one's more willing to buy. This was years ago. But that lesson only got more true as time went on, with brands like River Pool and Spas making over $2 million in sales, or Amazon making 57% of their sales from long-tail keywords. But the real question is: how do you find these long-tail keywords that people are typing and searching? You could do this by going to Google and typing in some of the keywords within your industry, and it'll suggest longer tail phrases. Or a better approach is just go to Ubersuggest and type in a keyword related to your space. It takes a more holistic approach and shows you the entire landscape of all the long-tail queries that people type into Google, ChatGPT, the other LLMs, and it sorts it by volume, keyword difficulty, and cost per click.
