Belege

A big reason many don’t make big money later is they spend too much money now. So when big opportunities come, they can’t take a big swing, because their house, car, and lifestyle costs too much. If you want to go offensive with money later, you gotta be defensive with it now.

I'm losing my mind. Should I fire a client that makes up 50% of my revenue? They're a nightmare, disorganized records, last minute requests every week, urgent messages every weekend. Last month, I was up until 2:00 a.m. three nights in a row because they dumped a box of receipts on me the day before their filing deadline. Everyone says drop them, but they're half of my income. So, are my only options happy but broke or stressed but paid? >> No, you're in a rock and hard place situation, but it's of your own making. And so, two changes. Number one is if you cut your income in half, we never actually walked that through, which is if I cut it in half, can I survive? If so, then yeah, you can fire the client and then you survive on half your income, which is why not being so aggressive with your lifestyle is important so you can be defensive with the business and then build it the right [music] way. The second element that I would say is if you don't want to give up all the income, then you just need to have stronger boundaries. Now, you can have that if you have a little bit of leverage over the customer. So, if you're doing some specific services that they can't do themselves, which I'm guessing given the amount that they're demanding from you, they probably can't do it themselves or they would have already found somebody. And so, you can say, "Hey, listen, we need to reset our agreement in terms of how we're going to work. I will work between these times, and this is the scope that I work within. This is what you can expect from me in terms of turnaround. If that doesn't work for you, that's fine. I'll happily continue to work for you for the next quarter or so so you can find somebody else." Call that the intermediary. You can still set those boundaries and say that's the way it's going to be, and then you can continue to work under this new agreement or arrangement. Now, if they don't want that, then that's up to them, but you keep to your boundaries. And then that will give you the time to go find another customer. But, I would say any of these three scenarios get you out of your current condition without worrying about like this is my life forever.
