Most raises at work are pretty darn small. Even if you create a ton of value. Seems a bit unfair, no? But that's just how business works. That doesn't mean jobs are bad. Jobs can be wonderful. Hell, CEOs are often wonderful. But they've gotta manage the costs. That's the deal. It's basically been the deal forever. The question you should ask is: Does this deal still make sense for you at this point in your career? Maybe it does, maybe it doesn't. I reached a point where I'd gotten really good at something the market valued, and I was capturing less than what I was worth. So I removed the middle layer between my skills and the people who needed them. It was just an honest look at the math. It made the decision relatively easy. Now...building something that actually worked on the other side? That was hard. It took a set of skills I had to figure out mostly on my own. I just wrote 30 pages on the 7 skills that mattered most in building my one-person business to $15M... Without destroying my life in the process.
